The Ancient Olympics: The Games and the Coinage
-- by Bill Daehn As we approach this year’s Summer Olympics, let’s take a look back at the origins of the Olympic Games which began in ancient Greece in 776 BC. We’ll learn about the origin of the Olympic Festival and explore the athletic events that were part of the festival. Then we’ll explore the site where the games were held. We’ll look at the layout of the festival grounds and see photographs that I took at Olympia during a 1995 trip to Greece and see the archaeological remains at this fascinating site as they appear today We’ll also look at some of the amazing artifacts from the Olympia Museum. Finally, we’ll explore the coinage that was struck for the festivals. That’s right----special coins were struck just for the ancient Olympics, and these are some of the most artistically beautiful coins ever struck. This will give you a better appreciation for the Olympic Games and introduce you to an amazing series of coins. Bill Daehn has been a member of the Northwest Coin Club since 1985 and has served two terms as President of the club, 1986-1988. He has been a member of the Twin Cities Ancient Coin Club since 1987 and also served two terms as President of that club. He has been a member of the ANA since 1977, and is also a member of the American Numismatic Society, the Central States Numismatic Society, the Numismatic Bibliomania Society, the Numismatic Literary Guild, and the Ancient Coin Collectors Guild. He collects ancient Greek and Roman coins. He is an award-winning numismatic exhibitor, winning “Best of Show” awards from the Northwest Coin Club and MOON, and other exhibiting awards from the Numismatists of Wisconsin and the Central States Numismatic Society. He is also an ANA-certified exhibit judge. Bill is the author of two books on ancient Greek numismatics, with a third book planned for later this year. In addition to his books, he has published sixteen numismatic papers which have appeared in Coins Magazine, The Numismatist, The Asylum, Penny-Wise, The Celator, and most recently in The International Journal of Classical Numismatics. In 2014 he received an award from the Twin Cities Ancient Coin Club recognizing his service to the club and his significant contributions to the study of ancient numismatics. Over the past 40 years, he has given 39 presentations to coin clubs. Tonight’s presentation will be his sixteenth presentation to the Northwest Coin Club since 1986. ---------------------------- After the presentation, for those who choose to stay... the Northwest Coin Club
Our local club has a rich history in the promotion of coin collecting and the education of Minnesota collectors. Founded in 1934, the NWCC is the oldest coin club in the Minneapolis - Saint Paul area and thought to be the 2nd oldest “regularly meeting” club in the entire country!
Education is the main reason our club exists and we are committed to providing local enthusiasts with the best and most current information available.
If you are a serious collector - or just thinking about becoming serious - joining a local coin club can be the best step towards enriching your hobby of numismatics. But don’t let the word “serious” scare you. The NWCC is comprised mostly of true hobbyists who collect coins and currency simply for the joy of it. We are not primarily focused on “turning a quick profit” from our endeavors, but on learning long-term strategies, best practices and especially on having lots of fun along the way.
If you are a coin collector in the Twin Cities Metro area, we encourage you to attend one of our monthly meetings and experience the camaraderie, fellowship and education offered by the Northwest Coin Club!
